Damascus Blade — Full-Surface Folded Grain

The blade is folded Damascus steel with one of the densest visible grain patterns in our catalog. Cloud formations, water eddies, smoke currents — the organic shapes created by repeated folding cover every visible surface from habaki to kissaki. The pattern is structural, not etched: different steel layers folded together and revealed through acid treatment, meaning each Akanokiba Katana blade carries a unique grain that cannot be replicated. The Damascus here is the feature — no colored finish, no overlay, no competition.

Black Dragon Tsuba — Gold Rim

The tsuba is black iron-alloy with dragon or creature forms carved in relief across the disc, framed by a thin gold rim. The black finish absorbs light while the gold rim catches it — a narrow bright line tracing the guard's circumference. The brass habaki below carries a gold circular mon — interlocking curves within a ring — the only warm metallic accent visible from the front. The mon sits against the black habaki body, glowing like an emblem in darkness.

Red Rayskin — Fang Aesthetic

The handle's defining feature: red synthetic rayskin visible at each diamond window beneath black cotton ito. The red diamonds against black wrapping create a predatory pattern — fangs embedded in shadow, blood-red punctuation through dark territory. The Akanokiba Katana is one of the few blades in our catalog with colored rayskin — most use white or black same. The red connects directly to the name and establishes the sword's identity before you even see the blade.

Crackle Saya — Organic Texture

The saya is dark brown lacquer covered in white crackle-splatter texture — irregular patterns suggesting animal hide, dried earth, or bark peeling from ancient wood. The organic randomness connects to the Damascus blade's natural grain: both surfaces display patterns created by material processes rather than applied decoration. The Akanokiba Katana pairs folded-steel chaos with crackle-lacquer chaos, reinforcing the "untamed" register from blade to scabbard.

Akanokiba — Red Fang

赤の牙 (akanokiba) — "red fang." The design maps predator anatomy onto traditional koshirae: red rayskin diamonds are the fangs, black ito is the hide, Damascus grain is the muscle beneath skin, crackle saya is the den. The Akanokiba Katana reads as organic and feral where most blades aim for refined or celestial. No blue, no gold accents beyond the single mon, no polished surfaces — every material suggests raw, natural force.

Display

Ships with a natural wood stand. The Damascus demands side-lighting to reveal the full depth of the folded grain — patterns shift and reveal new formations as the viewing angle changes. Browse our catalog to compare with the Kurenai Kage (Damascus, black saya, red claw slashes) for a predator duo, or set beside the Emerald (green, geological) for opposite nature registers — feral vs mineral.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is each Damascus pattern unique?

Yes. The folded grain is structural — created by layering and folding different steel types. Acid treatment reveals the pattern. No two blades produce identical grain.

Is the rayskin actually red?

Red synthetic rayskin — dyed to create crimson diamond windows beneath the black cotton ito. The red is the first thing your eye catches on the handle.

What is the crackle texture on the saya?

White crackle-splatter pattern applied over dark brown lacquer — organic, irregular texture suggesting natural surfaces like bark, dried earth, or animal hide.

What does Akanokiba mean?

赤の牙 — "red fang." The name references the red rayskin diamonds visible through the black handle wrapping, reading as fangs or claws embedded in the grip.

How does this compare to the Kurenai Kage?

Both use Damascus steel with predatory themes. The Kurenai Kage has a glossy black saya with crimson claw slashes and a sunburst tsuba. The Akanokiba has a crackle-texture saya, red rayskin, and dragon tsuba. Slasher vs stalker.

Good sword, small issue on arrival

Saya mouth was slightly loose when I got it, fitting tape sorted it. Balance is great though. People at my dojo always ask about it.

Way better than I expected

Hamon is clean, handle wrap tight, saya closes solid. Came in a wooden box. No complaints at all for the price.

Nice blade but took 2 weeks to arrive

Damascus looks great. Shipping to Portland took forever and tracking was dead for a week. Quality is there, logistics need work.
