Blue T10 Steel — Storm Finish

The blade is forged from T10 tool steel — tungsten-content high-carbon steel reaching 60-62 HRC — with an electric blue finish and diagonal white streaks across the surface that suggest lightning cutting through a storm sky. The blue is applied over the forged and sharpened T10, giving the tanto its visual identity without compromising the steel's functional edge beneath. The streaks create movement on a short blade that might otherwise read as static — the pattern ensures the Aoto tanto commands attention despite its compact size.

Tanto — The Samurai's Short Blade

A tanto is a Japanese short sword with a blade under 30 cm (this one runs 33 cm — slightly long for the category). Samurai carried tanto alongside their katana as part of the traditional paired sword system, using the short blade for close-quarters combat, indoor fighting where a katana proved unwieldy, and as a weapon of last resort. The tanto's thick spine and compact geometry concentrate cutting force into a shorter edge — what it lacks in reach it gains in control and penetration. The blade follows that traditional geometry: thick spine, single edge, angular kissaki point.

Black Iron Fittings — Minimal Hardware

The iron tsuba, kashira, and kojiri are deliberately simple — dark metal, clean lines, no ornament. On a blade this compact, ornate fittings would overwhelm the design. The brass habaki provides the single warm accent at the blade-guard junction. Black cotton ito wraps over white synthetic rayskin in the standard diamond pattern, scaled down for the 16 cm handle. Everything on the Aoto tanto is proportionally reduced from katana scale — same construction principles, smaller execution.

Display & Collection

Ships with a simple angled wooden stand. The Aoto tanto is the first short blade in our collection — pair it with any full-size katana from our catalog to build a daishō-inspired display (long sword + short sword). The blue T10 blade matches particularly well with the Blue Blade Katana or the Hekinan for a blue-themed pairing. The compact size also makes the tanto ideal for shelves, desks, and display cases where a full 105 cm katana would not fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tanto?

A tanto is a traditional Japanese short sword — typically with a blade under 30 cm. Samurai carried tanto as companion blades to the katana, using them for close-quarters combat, indoor fighting, and as a last-resort weapon. The Aoto's blade is 33 cm, slightly above the traditional cutoff.

Is this Aoto tanto sharp?

Yes. The T10 tool steel blade is hand-sharpened and functional. Handle with care, store in the saya, and check local regulations before ordering.

Is the blue finish painted?

The electric blue finish is applied over the forged T10 steel. It is more durable than standard paint but should be maintained carefully to avoid scratching. The functional cutting edge is preserved beneath the finish.

Can I display this with a katana?

Yes. The tanto pairs naturally with any full-size katana on a two-tier display stand, creating a daishō-inspired arrangement (long sword + short sword). The blue blade matches our Blue Blade Katana or Hekinan particularly well.

What does Aoto mean?

Aoto (青刀) means "blue blade" in Japanese — referencing the electric blue T10 steel finish that defines this tanto's visual identity.

Care & Maintenance

To maintain your katana's appearance and performance over time, we recommend:

- Regularly wiping the blade with a soft cloth to remove fingerprints and moisture.
- Applying a light coat of choji oil to prevent rust (for carbon steel blades).
- Storing the sword in a dry place, preferably inside its saya.
- Avoiding direct contact with hard surfaces to preserve sharpness and finish.

Good sword, small issue on arrival

Saya mouth was slightly loose when I got it, fitting tape sorted it. Balance is great though. People at my dojo always ask about it.

Way better than I expected

Hamon is clean, handle wrap tight, saya closes solid. Came in a wooden box. No complaints at all for the price.

Nice blade but took 2 weeks to arrive

Damascus looks great. Shipping to Portland took forever and tracking was dead for a week. Quality is there, logistics need work.
