T10 Steel with Genuine Hamon
The blade is forged from T10 tool steel — tungsten-content high-carbon reaching 60-62 HRC — with a genuine hamon temper line running the blade's length. The hamon is produced through traditional clay tempering: hard martensite at the cutting edge, softer pearlite at the spine. That genuine hamon is what separates the Aozora tanto from our Aoto and Shirayuki (both blue T10 without hamon). Same steel grade, different level of heat treatment. The hamon proves the blade underwent real differential hardening — not decoration, but metallurgy.
Carved Blue Bamboo Saya
The saya is deep navy lacquered solid wood with a carved white bamboo motif — the stalks and leaves rendered in white against the glossy blue surface. Bamboo (take 竹) in Japanese symbolism represents resilience, flexibility, and steady growth — it bends without breaking, grows fast, stays green through winter. The carved motif is cut into the lacquer, not painted on, giving the design physical depth and tactile texture. The Aozora tanto saya reads as calm and collected — navy blue, clean lines, a single botanical motif, no excess.
Navy Silk Ito & Sageo
Navy blue silk ito wraps the handle and navy blue silk sageo cords the saya — matching silk on both components. White rayskin diamonds flash through the dark blue crossings. Silk provides a tighter, flatter wrap than cotton, and at the 16 cm tanto handle size every detail of the wrapping quality is visible. The blade joins the Hagane (black silk), Enzan (brown silk), and Shirayuki (white silk) as our silk-wrapped tanto — each in a different color. Navy is the most versatile: it disappears in collections, matches any décor, and ages gracefully.
Aozora — Blue Sky
Aozora (青空) means "blue sky" — the clear, calm overhead that Japanese culture associates with favorable conditions, new beginnings, and open possibility. The Aozora tanto embodies that energy: no storm (Aoto), no dramatic gradient (Enzan), no spiritual minimalism (Shirayuki), just a well-built blade in a clean blue scabbard ready for whatever comes next. If you're choosing your first quality tanto, the Aozora balances genuine craftsmanship with a design that works everywhere.
Display & Collection
Ships with a reddish wooden stand. The Aozora pairs with any full-size katana from our collection for a katana-and-tanto display — the navy palette matches the Kumo (navy saya, T10), Hekinan (wave pattern), or Blue Blade Katana particularly well. In the five-tanto lineup, the Aozora sits between the Hagane's traditional darkness and the Enzan's opulent color — the balanced, everyday option. Compact enough for desks, shelves, and cases where a katana will not fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this tanto have a real hamon?
Yes. The blade has a genuine hamon produced through traditional clay tempering — the visible boundary between hard edge and softer spine. This is the key upgrade over our Aoto and Shirayuki tanto, which use the same T10 steel without clay tempering.
What is the bamboo carving?
The white bamboo motif on the saya is carved into the lacquer surface — not painted or printed. The design has physical depth and tactile texture. Bamboo symbolizes resilience and flexibility in Japanese culture.
Is this Aozora tanto sharp?
Yes. The T10 tool steel blade is hand-sharpened and functional. Handle with care, store in the saya, and check local regulations before ordering.
What does Aozora mean?
Aozora (青空) means "blue sky" — representing clarity, favorable conditions, and open possibility. The name reflects the tanto's calm navy aesthetic and its role as a versatile, everyday-quality blade.
How does this compare to the other tanto?
The Aoto is blue T10 without hamon (storm visual). The Hagane is Damascus clay-tempered with black silk (traditional). The Enzan is T10 with gradient saya (opulent). The Shirayuki is white sumi-e (meditative). The Aozora is T10 with genuine hamon, silk ito, and carved bamboo saya — the most balanced option combining real metallurgy with refined presentation.

Excellent
Good sword, small issue on arrival
Saya mouth was slightly loose when I got it, fitting tape sorted it. Balance is great though. People at my dojo always ask about it.
Way better than I expected
Hamon is clean, handle wrap tight, saya closes solid. Came in a wooden box. No complaints at all for the price.
Got it as a gift, he was speechless
Bought for my boyfriend who does iaido. He said the fit and finish were legit. I knew nothing about swords, site made it easy to pick.
Nice blade but took 2 weeks to arrive
Damascus looks great. Shipping to Portland took forever and tracking was dead for a week. Quality is there, logistics need work.
Third order, still no complaints
Ordered three times over two years. Always well packed, matches the photos. Support replied same day. Will keep coming back.
