Blue 1095 Steel — Premium Beneath the Color
The blade is forged from 1095 carbon steel — the highest carbon grade in our catalog (0.95% carbon), harder than 1060 and capable of holding a finer edge. The blue mirror finish is applied over the 1095, creating the metallic azure sheen that defines the blade's visual identity. But the color is not the point — the steel beneath is. The Azure Spirit katana uses the same 1095 grade found on our Gold Katana and Kagekuro (where it forms the Sanmai core). The blue is surface; the 1095 is substance.
True Clay-Tempered Hamon & Bo-Hi
The blade carries a true clay-tempered hamon — genuine differential hardening through traditional tsuchioki method, not machine-made, not etched. The hamon is visible beneath the blue finish as a subtle line along the cutting edge. A bo-hi (fuller groove) runs the blade's length, reducing weight and producing the tachikaze whistle during cuts. 1095 steel + genuine hamon + bo-hi is the most functionally complete specification available on a colored blade in our catalog. The Azure Spirit katana does not trade performance for aesthetics — it stacks both.
Matching Azure Saya
The saya is azure blue lacquered wood — the same blue register as the blade, creating visual unity when sheathed. Gold koiguchi and kojiri cap both ends, the warm metallic accents framing the cool blue. When the sword sits on its stand, blade sheathed, it reads as a single blue-and-gold object. Draw the blade and the blue doubles — azure steel above, azure saya below, the gold habaki bridging them.
Black Handle — Neutral Ground
Black cotton ito wraps over black synthetic rayskin — the handle stays neutral, letting the blue blade and blue saya carry the color. The iron tsuba in black with openwork pattern provides the dark transition between handle and blade. The brass habaki is the single warm accent at the junction. The blade limits its palette to three elements: blue (blade + saya), black (handle + guard), gold (fittings). No fourth color, no competing accents.
Azure Spirit — Blue Sky Energy
Azure is the color of clear sky at its deepest point — overhead, away from the horizon, where blue intensifies to its richest state. The Azure Spirit katana captures that peak blue on its mirror-polished blade. The name suggests the spirit (精 sei) that inhabits the steel — the life a blade acquires through forging, the personality it develops through use. In Japanese sword culture, blades were considered living things. This one is alive in blue.
Display
Ships with an ornate black stand with painted dragon panel and gold feet. The Azure Spirit pairs with the Blue Blade Katana (1060, blue crystalline) for a blue blade comparison — different steels, different blues. Pair with the Gold Katana for a color-themed duo: azure and gold, sky and sun. The matching blade-saya color makes this one of the most visually cohesive swords in the catalog.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the hamon genuine clay-tempered?
Yes. The hamon is produced through true clay tempering (tsuchioki) — genuine differential hardening creating hard martensite edge and softer pearlite spine. It is visible beneath the blue finish as a subtle line along the cutting edge.
What is 1095 steel?
1095 is the highest carbon grade in our catalog — approximately 0.95% carbon content. It is harder than 1060, holds a sharper edge, and is the same grade used on our Gold Katana and Kagekuro Sanmai core.
Is this Azure Spirit katana sharp?
Yes. The 1095 carbon steel blade is hand-sharpened and functional beneath the blue finish. Handle with care, store in the saya, and check local regulations before ordering.
Does the blue finish affect the hamon?
The hamon is visible as a subtle line beneath the blue mirror finish. It is less prominent than on a polished silver blade, but the differential hardening is genuine — the metallurgical boundary between hard edge and soft spine exists regardless of surface color.
How does this compare to the Blue Blade Katana?
The Blue Blade uses 1060 steel with a blue crystalline finish — visual drama, standard hardness. The Azure Spirit uses 1095 with true clay-tempered hamon and bo-hi — premium steel, genuine differential hardening, functional fuller. Same color family, different performance tier.

Excellent
Good sword, small issue on arrival
Saya mouth was slightly loose when I got it, fitting tape sorted it. Balance is great though. People at my dojo always ask about it.
Way better than I expected
Hamon is clean, handle wrap tight, saya closes solid. Came in a wooden box. No complaints at all for the price.
Got it as a gift, he was speechless
Bought for my boyfriend who does iaido. He said the fit and finish were legit. I knew nothing about swords, site made it easy to pick.
Nice blade but took 2 weeks to arrive
Damascus looks great. Shipping to Portland took forever and tracking was dead for a week. Quality is there, logistics need work.
Third order, still no complaints
Ordered three times over two years. Always well packed, matches the photos. Support replied same day. Will keep coming back.
