Black Blade — 1060 Carbon Steel
The blade is hand-forged from 1060 carbon steel and finished in full black. The blackening process coats the steel after forging and sharpening, giving the blade a uniform dark appearance while preserving the functional edge beneath. 1060 delivers the hardness and edge retention that lower-grade steels (1045, 1035) cannot match — the black finish adds visual impact without compromising the metallurgy. The result is a blade that disappears against the black saya when sheathed and reveals its curve only when drawn.
Dragon Saya — Silver on Black
The black lacquered saya features a silver-painted dragon wrapping around the scabbard in relief. Against the high-gloss black lacquer, the metallic dragon creates the only break in the monochrome — a deliberate contrast that gives the black katana its character. The dragon motif is hand-applied, not decal. Solid hardwood construction beneath the lacquer gives the scabbard weight and durability that hollow alternatives lack.
Brass Habaki — The Gold Detail
The brass habaki is the single warm accent on the entire sword. Its geometric chevron pattern (repeating V-shaped lines) catches light against the surrounding black, drawing the eye to the junction between blade and guard. This deliberate restraint — one gold element among total darkness — is what separates the full black katana from cheaper all-black swords that use matching black hardware and lose all visual depth. The habaki secures the blade in the saya and provides the tonal contrast that makes the design work.
Iron Alloy Tsuba — Dark Guard
The iron alloy tsuba maintains the monochrome commitment with a dark finish and sculptural relief work across its face. Iron alloy is heavier than zinc castings, giving the guard authentic presence and shifting the balance point closer to the handle — a noticeable difference when you pick up the sword. The dark patina blends into the overall black aesthetic while rewarding close inspection with dimensional detail.
Display & Collection
Ships with a reddish-brown wooden stand with carved medallion. The full black katana works in any environment — it reads as executive décor rather than anime merchandise, fitting home offices, living rooms, and display cases where louder swords might feel out of place. Pair with the Blue Dragon, Angel, or Purple Blade from our original katana collection for contrast, or display solo where the dragon saya and gold habaki do the talking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the black blade painted?
The blade receives a black finish after forging and sharpening. The coating is applied to the steel surface — the cutting edge remains functional beneath. The finish is more durable than spray paint but should still be maintained with care to prevent scratching.
Does the black blade have a hamon?
The black coating covers the blade uniformly, so no hamon temper line is visible. The 1060 steel beneath may have a differential hardening line, but the black finish conceals it by design.
Is this full black katana sharp?
Yes. The 1060 carbon steel blade is hand-sharpened and functional. Handle with care, store in the saya, and check your local regulations before ordering.
Is the dragon on the saya painted or carved?
The dragon is painted in silver metallic tones directly onto the black lacquered hardwood saya. It is surface decoration rather than relief carving.
Does this reference any anime or game?
No. This is an original design — a monochrome display katana with no connection to any fictional property.

Care & Maintenance

- Applying a light coat of choji oil to prevent rust (for carbon steel blades).
- Storing the sword in a dry place, preferably inside its saya.
- Avoiding direct contact with hard surfaces to preserve sharpness and finish.

Excellent
Good sword, small issue on arrival
Saya mouth was slightly loose when I got it, fitting tape sorted it. Balance is great though. People at my dojo always ask about it.
Way better than I expected
Hamon is clean, handle wrap tight, saya closes solid. Came in a wooden box. No complaints at all for the price.
Got it as a gift, he was speechless
Bought for my boyfriend who does iaido. He said the fit and finish were legit. I knew nothing about swords, site made it easy to pick.
Nice blade but took 2 weeks to arrive
Damascus looks great. Shipping to Portland took forever and tracking was dead for a week. Quality is there, logistics need work.
Third order, still no complaints
Ordered three times over two years. Always well packed, matches the photos. Support replied same day. Will keep coming back.
