Damascus Blade with Genuine Hamon

The blade is folded Damascus steel with a visible hamon temper line — a notare (gentle wave) pattern running the blade's length where the hard cutting edge meets the softer spine. The Damascus grain flows across the hand-polished surface, and the hamon cuts across that grain at a different angle, the two patterns interacting into a single layered composition. On the Hanachi katana, neither feature dominates — the Damascus provides texture, the hamon provides structure, and the polish brings both to the surface together.

Carved Copper Tsuba — Living Metal

The copper tsuba features carved floral relief across both faces — leaves, petals, and vines sculpted into the metal. Copper is warmer and heavier than iron, giving the guard a reddish-brown tone that deepens over time as natural patina develops. That patina is a feature, not a defect — it proves the copper is genuine and creates character that plated or coated guards cannot develop. The visible copper core at the rim confirms the material through and through. The brass habaki beneath carries the openwork crackle pattern found across our Damascus premium lineup.

Dark Wood Saya with Leather Fittings

The saya transitions from visible dark wood grain at the koiguchi into lacquered black along the body — the natural and the finished meeting on one scabbard. A silver floral band marks the transition. Leather fittings at the kurikata and sageo attachment points add a tactile, organic quality against the smooth lacquer. The black-and-white braided sageo provides the textured cord, and the silver floral kashira at the handle's end echoes the tsuba's carved botanical motifs. The Hanachi katana treats its materials honestly: wood grain exposed where it is beautiful, lacquered where protection matters more.

Hanachi — Release

Hanachi (放ち) means "release" or "letting go" — the Japanese concept that choosing to release demonstrates greater strength than clinging. The blade's natural materials embody that philosophy: copper will patina, wood will darken, Damascus will develop character through handling. Resisting those changes exhausts energy; accepting them brings the wabi-sabi beauty that only time creates. The Hanachi katana is built from materials that age gracefully rather than fight entropy — for collectors who understand that a blade's story is written by the years it spends on display, not by the day it arrived. If you're looking for a real katana with genuine materials that earn their character, this is that blade.

Display

Ships with a simple black modern stand. The dark palette works in traditional and contemporary spaces alike. The Hanachi pairs with the Kuroki (magnolia saya, stingray ito — different natural-material philosophy) or the Yamitsuki (amber wood saya — warm vs cool natural tones). Solo, the carved copper tsuba commands close inspection, and the Damascus-hamon interaction rewards directional lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the copper tsuba change color?

Yes. Copper develops a natural patina over time — darkening from bright reddish-brown to deeper tones with possible green-blue oxidation. This is a normal aging process for genuine copper and adds character. You can polish it back to bright copper or let the patina develop naturally.

Is the blade real Damascus?

Yes. The blade is folded from multiple steel layers, acid-etched after polishing to reveal the internal grain. Each blade produces a slightly different Damascus pattern during the forging process.

Is this Hanachi katana sharp?

Yes. The Damascus steel blade is hand-sharpened and functional. Handle with care, store in the saya, and check local regulations before ordering.

Is the rayskin genuine?

Yes. Genuine rayskin (samegawa) on the handle beneath the black cotton ito wrapping. The nodular texture is natural, not synthetic.

What does Hanachi mean?

Hanachi (放ち) means "release" or "letting go" — an active, intentional choice to let something follow its natural course. The name reflects the blade's philosophy of natural materials that age honestly rather than resist change.

Good sword, small issue on arrival

Saya mouth was slightly loose when I got it, fitting tape sorted it. Balance is great though. People at my dojo always ask about it.

Way better than I expected

Hamon is clean, handle wrap tight, saya closes solid. Came in a wooden box. No complaints at all for the price.

Nice blade but took 2 weeks to arrive

Damascus looks great. Shipping to Portland took forever and tracking was dead for a week. Quality is there, logistics need work.
