Black Blade — Geometric Lightning
The blade is 1060 carbon steel with a black finish and white lightning engravings running along the dark section. The bolts are angular and crystalline, with sharp edges and geometric intersections that look closer to fractured glass than organic electrical discharge. Where the Lightning Katana uses flowing, organic bolt patterns, the Kurojin Raikiba Katana renders the same energy through hard geometry. The blade and saya carry matching patterns, creating visual continuity from steel to scabbard.
Black Dragon Tsuba — Dark-on-Dark
The tsuba is black iron-alloy with dragon and cloud forms carved in sculptural relief. The dark-on-dark finish hides the carving until light catches the raised surfaces at the right angle. The guard rewards close inspection rather than announcing itself. The brass honeycomb habaki is the only visible metallic accent from the front, its gold geometric pattern glowing against the surrounding black. The Kurojin Raikiba Katana treats its warm accent the way a hunter treats a lure: one bright point in total darkness.
Dual Saya — Lightning and Dragon
Two black scabbards. The primary carries the same jagged white lightning pattern as the blade, the angular bolts slashing across glossy black lacquer. The secondary features dragon engravings in relief, visible only under direct light. Both are black. Both hide their detail in shadow. The Kurojin Raikiba Katana is the eleventh dual-saya katana in our catalog, and the only one where both scabbards share the same base color.
All-Black Handle
Black cotton ito over synthetic rayskin. A single gold menuki provides the only color accent on the handle. The monochrome discipline is total: black blade, black tsuba, black saya, black ito, black sageo. White exists only as lightning. Gold exists only at the habaki and single menuki. The palette has three elements and zero room for anything else.
Kurojin Raikiba — Black Thunder Fang
黒刃雷牙 (kurojin raikiba) combines black blade (黒刃), thunder (雷), and fang (牙). The angular lightning patterns become teeth when read through the name: electrical fangs biting through darkness, white edges in a black mouth. The Kurojin Raikiba is the aggressive counterpart to the Lightning Katana's atmospheric approach. Same natural phenomenon, opposite visual language: one organic and blue, the other geometric and black.
Display
Ships with a natural wood stand bearing 武 (Bu) kanji. The Kurojin Raikiba Katana photographs best against dark backgrounds where the white lightning pops. Alternate the lightning saya for geometric impact and the dragon saya for traditional presence. Compare with the Lightning (blue, organic bolts, blue tsuba) and the Shimokaminari (frost crackle, dark Damascus) in our catalog for three storm-themed blades with different visual philosophies.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do the lightning patterns differ from the Lightning Katana?
The Lightning uses organic, flowing bolt patterns on a blue blade with raised 3D relief. The Kurojin Raikiba uses angular, geometric bolt patterns on a black blade. Organic storm vs crystalline discharge.
Why are both scabbards black?
The all-black palette reinforces the "black thunder" concept. The primary saya shows lightning (the strike). The secondary shows dragons (the mythological source). Both hide in darkness until examined.
What is the habaki pattern?
Brass honeycomb openwork. The gold hexagonal grid is the warmest visible element on the entire sword.
Is the blade actually black?
1060 carbon steel with a black surface finish. The steel beneath is functional and sharpened. The black is a treated surface, not oxidation.
Does this include two scabbards?
Yes. Black with white geometric lightning and black with dragon relief engravings. Eleventh dual-saya katana in our catalog.

Excellent
Good sword, small issue on arrival
Saya mouth was slightly loose when I got it, fitting tape sorted it. Balance is great though. People at my dojo always ask about it.
Way better than I expected
Hamon is clean, handle wrap tight, saya closes solid. Came in a wooden box. No complaints at all for the price.
Got it as a gift, he was speechless
Bought for my boyfriend who does iaido. He said the fit and finish were legit. I knew nothing about swords, site made it easy to pick.
Nice blade but took 2 weeks to arrive
Damascus looks great. Shipping to Portland took forever and tracking was dead for a week. Quality is there, logistics need work.
Third order, still no complaints
Ordered three times over two years. Always well packed, matches the photos. Support replied same day. Will keep coming back.
