Flame Hamon — Fire on Steel
The hamon on the Ginto katana is a flame pattern — irregular pointed shapes rising from the cutting edge like tongues of fire, the most dramatic hamon style in traditional swordsmithing. Flame hamon (also called "flame-shaped midare") requires precise and varied clay application during the tempering process: thicker and thinner zones create the pointed flame tips when the blade is quenched. The result is a hamon that looks alive — flickering, vertical, aggressive. The exceptional polish on this T10 blade brings the flame pattern into sharp contrast against the darker polished spine above. This is the first flame hamon in our catalog — every other hamon is notare, gunome, choji, suguha, or hitatsura.
Gold-Silver Plated Tsuba & Fittings
The tsuba, fuchi (handle collar), and menuki (grip ornaments) are plated in real gold and silver — not brass-tone or chrome, but precious-metal plating over a copper base. The tsuba features dragon-floral relief in the bicolor treatment: gold highlights on silver ground, the two metals creating visual richness that single-tone guards cannot match. The brass habaki provides the warm transition between plated fittings and polished T10 blade. The Ginto katana is the only blade in our catalog with gold-and-silver plated fittings across tsuba, fuchi, and menuki simultaneously.
Genuine Rayskin Saya — Double Samegawa
Like the Akagane, the Ginto katana wraps its saya in genuine rayskin (samegawa) over a solid wood core. The gray granular texture covers the entire scabbard — no lacquer, no leather substitute. An amber buffalo horn koiguchi frames the saya opening. Black cotton ito wraps over genuine rayskin on the handle, creating the same double-samegawa construction. Two swords in our catalog use rayskin saya; this is the second, distinguished by its precious-metal fittings and flame hamon.
T10 Steel — Exceptional Finish
The T10 tool steel blade receives an exceptional hand-polished finish — noticeably higher-quality than the standard polish on our entry-level T10 blades. The additional polishing stages bring out the flame hamon's contrast and reveal the steel's grain structure more clearly. T10 reaches 60-62 HRC, providing edge retention that softer steels cannot match. New to katana steel grades? Our beginner guide explains the differences between 1060, T10, and Damascus — the Ginto sits in the T10 premium tier with the Kumo, Shirokuro, and Ouryu.
Ginto — Silver Blade
Ginto (銀刀) means "silver blade" — a name referencing both the bright polished steel and the precious-metal plating across the fittings. The blade combines the Akagane's rayskin saya with gold-silver plated hardware and a flame hamon found nowhere else in the catalog. Where the Akagane expresses authenticity through restraint (plain iron tsuba, red ito, no precious metals), the Ginto expresses it through elevation — the same premium materials dressed in gold and silver.
Display
Ships with a horn-style bronze stand on a dark wood base. The Ginto pairs naturally with the Akagane for a rayskin-saya comparison — red handle versus black, iron tsuba versus gold-plated, two approaches to the same unique scabbard material. Solo, the flame hamon and gold-silver tsuba ensure this blade commands attention whether sheathed (rayskin texture) or drawn (fire on steel).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a flame hamon?
A flame hamon is a temper line pattern with irregular pointed shapes rising from the cutting edge — resembling flames. It requires varied clay application during the traditional tempering process and is one of the most dramatic hamon styles. This is the only flame hamon in our catalog.
Are the fittings real gold and silver?
The tsuba, fuchi, and menuki are plated in real gold and silver over a copper base. They are not solid precious metal, but the plating is genuine — not brass-tone or chrome substitute.
Is this Ginto katana sharp?
Yes. The T10 tool steel blade is hand-sharpened and functional. Handle with care, store in the saya, and check local regulations before ordering.
Is the rayskin on the saya genuine?
Yes. The saya is wrapped in genuine rayskin (samegawa) over a solid wood core — the same construction as our Akagane katana. The gray nodular texture is natural and cannot be replicated by lacquer or synthetic materials.
What makes the finish "exceptional"?
The Ginto receives additional hand-polishing stages beyond the standard finish on our other T10 blades. The extra polishing brings out the flame hamon's contrast more sharply and reveals the steel's grain structure with greater clarity.

Excellent
Good sword, small issue on arrival
Saya mouth was slightly loose when I got it, fitting tape sorted it. Balance is great though. People at my dojo always ask about it.
Way better than I expected
Hamon is clean, handle wrap tight, saya closes solid. Came in a wooden box. No complaints at all for the price.
Got it as a gift, he was speechless
Bought for my boyfriend who does iaido. He said the fit and finish were legit. I knew nothing about swords, site made it easy to pick.
Nice blade but took 2 weeks to arrive
Damascus looks great. Shipping to Portland took forever and tracking was dead for a week. Quality is there, logistics need work.
Third order, still no complaints
Ordered three times over two years. Always well packed, matches the photos. Support replied same day. Will keep coming back.
