Damascus Steel with True Clay-Tempered Hamon

The blade is folded Damascus steel with a true clay-tempered hamon — genuine differential hardening through the traditional tsuchioki method. The Damascus grain flows across the polished surface while the hamon runs beneath, the two patterns layering into a composition unique to each blade. Cloud-and-wave engravings near the habaki add a third visual element — carved motifs that reference the ronin's wandering path. The Ronin Wood katana combines folded steel, genuine hamon, and blade engraving — the same triple combination found on our Ginkai flagship, here paired with rosewood instead of shell saya.

Dragon-Carved Rosewood Saya

The saya is natural rosewood with a three-dimensional dragon carved in relief — scales, claws, and flowing body projecting from the wood surface. The grain is visible around the carving, the warm brown tones creating organic texture no lacquered saya can match. Rosewood is dense enough to hold carved detail without splintering, and it darkens through handling over time. The Kagehana Ninjato and Shizen Ninjato also use rosewood; the Ronin Wood katana adds a dragon carving the others omit.

Gold Diamond Emblem Tsuba

The ferro-alloy tsuba features a gold diamond-shaped emblem at center — a geometric badge with internal bamboo motif that reads as a clan mon (family crest). Dragon relief covers the guard's face around the emblem, and the black finish with aged patina gives the tsuba an antique quality. The gold diamond provides the single bright focal point on an otherwise dark guard — a craftsman's touch that identifies the blade across a room.

Genuine Rayskin & Copper Habaki

Black cotton ito wraps over genuine rayskin (samegawa) — the nodular texture visible through the cord crossings. White menuki sit beneath the wrapping as grip accents. The copper habaki provides the warm metallic transition between blade and guard. The handle uses the standard premium material set — genuine rayskin, copper habaki, cotton ito — scaled to a 26.3 cm handle, slightly shorter than our standard 30 cm, giving the blade a marginally different balance point.

Ronin — The Masterless Path

A ronin (浪人 — "wave person") was a samurai without a lord — a warrior who wandered between masters, between towns, between identities. The natural rosewood saya connects the Ronin Wood katana to that wandering life: organic, unpolished, marked by the elements. The cloud engravings on the blade reference the ronin's drifting existence — clouds without fixed ground, moving wherever wind carries them. The gold diamond emblem suggests retained nobility: even without a lord, the warrior maintains his craft.

Display

Ships with an ornate black stand with painted dragon panel. The Ronin Wood pairs with the Kuroki (magnolia saya, Damascus, stingray — different natural-wood approach) or the Hanachi (copper tsuba, dark wood, Damascus — shared natural palette). The rosewood saya stands out in any collection dominated by lacquered scabbards — it reads as authentic artifact rather than decorated product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the hamon genuine clay-tempered?

Yes. The hamon is produced through true clay tempering (tsuchioki) — genuine differential hardening, not machine-made or acid-etched.

What is the dragon carving on the saya?

A three-dimensional dragon carved in relief into the rosewood surface. The carving has physical depth — you can feel the scales beneath your fingers. Each saya's grain pattern is unique.

Is this Ronin Wood katana sharp?

Yes. The Damascus steel blade is hand-sharpened and functional. Handle with care, store in the saya, and check local regulations before ordering.

Why are the dimensions slightly different?

The Ronin Wood measures 100 cm total with a 72.4 cm blade and 26.3 cm handle — slightly shorter and thinner (0.6 cm) than our standard 105 cm katana. The proportions give it a different balance and feel.

Is the rayskin genuine?

Yes. Genuine rayskin (samegawa) beneath the black cotton ito. The nodular texture is natural, not synthetic.

- Avoiding direct contact with hard surfaces to preserve sharpness and finish.

Good sword, small issue on arrival

Saya mouth was slightly loose when I got it, fitting tape sorted it. Balance is great though. People at my dojo always ask about it.

Way better than I expected

Hamon is clean, handle wrap tight, saya closes solid. Came in a wooden box. No complaints at all for the price.

Nice blade but took 2 weeks to arrive

Damascus looks great. Shipping to Portland took forever and tracking was dead for a week. Quality is there, logistics need work.
